AIS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) continues supporting athletes to be successful in sport, education and life, recently awarding more than $320,000 in scholarships to 118 athletes across 30 sports and 31 tertiary institutions through the AIS Education Scholarship program. As part of this year’s program, Judo Australia national team members Aoife Coughlan and Josh Katz have been awarded scholarships and as such recognised for their work and dedication on the mat and in the classroom.

  • Josh Katz, is earning his Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science and Bachelor of Sport Management from La Trobe University. He said to the media: "I am incredibly grateful for the support that the AIS Education Scholarship has provided me during my sporting and athletic career. Having the opportunity to continue my studies and continue to prepare for life after sport without the additional financial burden of University fees is a huge weight off my shoulders. It is often very challenging to be able to keep a balance between my life goals, training and competition, but I have always found that study has really helped me to apply myself mentally in a different avenue outside of Judo, and I know that when I look to finish my career in the future, I will have the foundations of qualifications to be able to transition successfully into my career industry."  Congratulations Josh.
  • Notably Nathan is also completing a Bachelor of Sports Media and currently has an internship with the Australian Olympic Committee.

This clearly demonstrates that it is possible to achieve great things in sport without compromising your career. Well done guys.

CLUB MERCHANDISE UPDATE

The new Budokan Polos and T-shirts look fantastic – if you have received your order or part of your order, please ensure that you pay for any goods received. Unfortunately, we don’t do IOUs. The Budokan Travelling Circus parents and families supporting our athletes were in colourful Budokan attire for the Nationals which was great to see. All the other merchandise items will be delivered after the school holidays so keep an eye out. For further details please contact Jo on 0458580107 or at docjoedwards@hotmail.com

CLUB BUILDING UPGRADE

The club has been successful in being awarded a $20,000 grant under the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program.  This is earmarked to upgrade the building’s power supply including the Electrical Distribution Board, new light fittings, and new fans. We are working with the contractor to schedule this work with minimal interruption to our training. Our future plan for grants includes installation of wall heaters, hence the need to firstly address the power supply issues.

CLUB MAINTENANCE

  • Stormwater. We have had had Council contract plumbers to address stormwater runoff problems from the front of the building. Please see Rob if you notice any further issues with drainage.
  • Rats. We have had Council arrange for Rentokil to recently treat the building over a number of occasions so the rat problem should now be OK. Please see Rob if you notice any further issues.
  • Gas Cylinders. Budokan provides umbrella-type gas heaters for the comfort of parents during Winter. If any of the tanks run dry, parents please feel free to exchange them at a garage and pass the receipt to any club coach or committee member and you will you be refunded the cost of the replacement cylinder. Please see Rob if there are any issues with this arrangement.
  • Mat Cleaning.  We introduced mat cleaning/sanitising during COVID restrictions, and we are still spraying the mats and mopping them after the last session of each training day. The containers in the kitchen need regular refilling (with a bleach and disinfectant mix) from time to time. Assistance from parents to keep them full would be greatly appreciated. If you can help, please see Rob for instructions on how this is done.

PARKING AT THE CLUB

PLEASE DO NOT PARK on the East side (Doran Drv) of the club building near the concrete porch. These places are reserved for club coaches who often have to bring in equipment.  Please also don’t park cross the road from the club directly in front of the club entrance as this hinders visibility of cars driving past the club and looking out for our members crossing the road. Thank you.
