PARKING AT THE CLUB

PLEASE DO NOT PARK on the East side (Doran Drv) of the club building on or in front of or next to the concrete porch. These two places are reserved for club head coaches who are running classes during the night and who often have to bring in equipment.  Please also don’t park across the road from the club directly in front of the club entrance as this hinders visibility of cars driving past the club and looking out for our members who may be crossing the road. Thank you.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATE - 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham England 1st – 3rd August - Josh Katz

With Josh seeded #2 in 60kg and Nathan #1 in 66kg, #TeamKatz had high expectations and were keen for a strong performance at their first Commonwealth Games.

  • Josh Katz 60kg. Josh had a bye in the Round of 32 and in R16 fought Bennett from Wales, who beat Tanzania in his first round. Josh fought strongly and with intent. His Ashi-Waza and Seoi-Nage were on point and mid-way in the match threw his opponent for Ippon. The QF was against another left-hander, Yadav from India, a difficult customer. Josh remained dominant but this match still went into Golden score. Again Seoi-Nage was the deciding factor. The semi-final was against multiple Grand-Slam and Grand-Prix medallist McKenzie (ENG). Josh was looking great in Tachi-Waza and the match was quite even. In Ne-Waza, McKenzie managed to catch Josh’s arm and roll him into a hold-down surprising Josh. With huge determination he escaped conceding a Waza-Ari. The remainder of the match saw Josh absolutely dominate and arguably McKenzie should have been penalised his third Shido but this was not the case.  McKenzie went on to win the competition. Josh’s Bronze match was against Zulu from Zambia. Josh completely dominated this match with Zulu conceding 3 Shidos in normal time. A great effort from Josh.

Nathan and Josh spent a bit of time in Sydney recently for a visit and to do some of their own training. They also took time out to assist in both club Junior and Senior sessions; great role models who always take the time to give back to the club – thank you boys!  They return to Melbourne and begin their final preparations for the Senior World Championships to be held in Tashkent Uzbekistan on 6th October. Following this, they will compete in Abu Dhabi on the 21st October, the Perth Oceania Open (Grand Prix points) on 29th October, a small regrouping in November and then December includes the Tokyo Grand Slam and the Jerusalem (World) Masters, a solid schedule for the rest of the year. Wishing the boys all the best in their quest for this Olympic cycle.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATE - 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham England 1st – 3rd August - Nathan Katz

With Josh seeded #2 in 60kg and Nathan #1 in 66kg, #TeamKatz had high expectations and were keen for a strong performance at their first Commonwealth Games.

  • Nathan Katz 66kg. Nathan’s first match (R16) was against Vidot (Seychelles). With dominant gripping, Nathan didn’t take long to find his line for his drop Morote Seoi-Nage ending the match in under 40 seconds. The QF was against the awkward left-hander Balarjishvili (Cyprus). Although the match was quite even going into Golden Score, Nathan did not impose on his opponent to the level he was expecting. CYP persisted with feeding his arm around Nathan’s shoulder and his Sumi-Gaeshi attack eventually resulted in a Waza-Ari score which was very disappointing for Nathan. An invigorated Nathan appeared against Varey (Wales) in repechage, with Nathan completely dominating every aspect of the match. Varey conceded his third Shido just before normal time and Nathan was to then fight the physical Saini (India) for Bronze. Left-hander Saini’s close-contact style was awkward making it difficult for Nathan to impose his style. With 2 Shidos down, Nathan was under pressure but almost managed a score with Sumi-Gaeshi in the closing minute. This gave him some confidence and with seconds remaining, he wound in a massive spinning drop Tai-Otoshi slamming Saini for Ippon, a great way to win Bronze.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATE - 2022 Kata World Championships, Krakow Poland – 13th – 14th September

Best wishes for a successful event to Bernhard and Bjorn Tandean who are currently representing Australia in the Katame-No-Kata (Groundwork Kata) at the World Kata Championships currently being held in Poland. As a strong (Shiai/combat) competition club, Budokan is proud to also have a core support for Kata learning and competition. For club members who retire from competition, or who prefer the non-combat discipline side of Judo, Kata provides another great way to learn Judo skills and still be able to compete. Many Katas or “forms of Judo” have a significant traditional value in Judo with movement, balance, and attacks and defences with various weapons. If you have less of an interest in shiai (combative competition) Judo, maybe Kata offers you another. See Dale for more information.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATE - 2022 Cadet World Championships, Sarajevo Bosnia 24th – 28th August - Will Zollinger

Will Zollinger 60kg.  Will’s first match in R32 was against Mulalic (Bosnia) who had beaten his opponent from Bahamas in the first round. He dominated the first 1m30s with Seoi-Nage and Kouchi and Ouchi-Gari. At this point he set up a nice drop Morote Seoi-Nage scoring Waza-Ari. The local boy worked hard getting in a couple of attacks but Will timed his left drop Ippon-Seoi well and followed up quickly on the ground to keep the pressure on and this is how the match ended. In the Round of 16, Will (World #45) was up against World #2 Ray of France. Will pressured the aggressive left-hander with Ashi-Waza and Tai-Otoshi bringing FRA to his knees. On the next exchange FRA gripped left and switched for a drop right Seoi-Nage scoring Waza-Ari. This was followed by some typical right versus left cat and mouse play, each trying to get hips in front of the other. Eventually, FRA reached around Will’s back and Will attacked immediately but FRA got in front of him scoring Waza-Ari ending the match. FRA went on to win Silver. A great effort from Will. Both Will and Clarissa fought confidently, with good structure to their play and attacked with purpose – they looked like they belonged on the international stage and the future looks bright for them. Well done guys.

  • Congratulations also to Budokan Coach Kerrye who was National Cadet Coach for this event.
