PLEASE DO NOT PARK on the East side (Doran Drv) of the club building on or in front of or next to the concrete porch. These two places are reserved for club head coaches who are running classes during the night and who often have to bring in equipment. Please also don’t park across the road from the club directly in front of the club entrance as this hinders visibility of cars driving past the club and looking out for our members who may be crossing the road. With Josh seeded #2 in 60kg and Nathan #1 in 66kg, #TeamKatz had high expectations and were keen for a strong performance at their first Commonwealth Games.
Nathan and Josh spent a bit of time in Sydney recently for a visit and to do some of their own training. They also took time out to assist in both club Junior and Senior sessions; great role models who always take the time to give back to the club – thank you boys! They return to Melbourne and begin their final preparations for the Senior World Championships to be held in Tashkent Uzbekistan on 6th October. Following this, they will compete in Abu Dhabi on the 21st October, the Perth Oceania Open (Grand Prix points) on 29th October, a small regrouping in November and then December includes the Tokyo Grand Slam and the Jerusalem (World) Masters, a solid schedule for the rest of the year. Wishing the boys all the best in their quest for this Olympic cycle.

Best wishes for a successful event to Bernhard and Bjorn Tandean who are currently representing Australia in the Katame-No-Kata (Groundwork Kata) at the World Kata Championships currently being held in Poland. As a strong (Shiai/combat) competition club, Budokan is proud to also have a core support for Kata learning and competition. For club members who retire from competition, or who prefer the non-combat discipline side of Judo, Kata provides another great way to learn Judo skills and still be able to compete. Many Katas or “forms of Judo” have a significant traditional value in Judo with movement, balance, and attacks and defences with various weapons. If you have less of an interest in shiai (combative competition) Judo, maybe Kata offers you another. See Dale for more information.
Will Zollinger 60kg. Will’s first match in R32 was against Mulalic (Bosnia) who had beaten his opponent from Bahamas in the first round. He dominated the first 1m30s with Seoi-Nage and Kouchi and Ouchi-Gari. At this point he set up a nice drop Morote Seoi-Nage scoring Waza-Ari. The local boy worked hard getting in a couple of attacks but Will timed his left drop Ippon-Seoi well and followed up quickly on the ground to keep the pressure on and this is how the match ended. In the Round of 16, Will (World #45) was up against World #2 Ray of France. Will pressured the aggressive left-hander with Ashi-Waza and Tai-Otoshi bringing FRA to his knees. On the next exchange FRA gripped left and switched for a drop right Seoi-Nage scoring Waza-Ari. This was followed by some typical right versus left cat and mouse play, each trying to get hips in front of the other. Eventually, FRA reached around Will’s back and Will attacked immediately but FRA got in front of him scoring Waza-Ari ending the match. FRA went on to win Silver. A great effort from Will. Both Will and Clarissa fought confidently, with good structure to their play and attacked with purpose – they looked like they belonged on the international stage and the future looks bright for them.
